Dog Friendly Hikes in Durango, CO

Durango, Colorado, is a charming mountain town located near both the San Juan and La Plata mountain ranges. It is renowned for its rich history and vibrant outdoor lifestyle, making it a perfect vacation destination for pups. The town boasts a picturesque blend of historic architecture, particularly in its well-preserved downtown area, with stunning mountain views, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, skiing, and river rafting.

ANIMAS RIVER TRAIL

The Animas River Trail, also known as ART, presents an excellent opportunity for a dog-friendly hike downtown. You can access the trail at the intersection of 32nd St. and East 3rd Ave; and then enjoy a scenic 9 mile walk along the picturesque Animas River. It stretches through the heart of Durango, spanning from Oxbow Park and Preserve to the north to River Road to the south. It’s important to note that due to its location within city limits, all dogs must be leashed at all times. This trail is perfect for beginners, offering a pleasant and easy trek with beautiful views along the way.

DURANGO OFF-LEASH DOG PARK

The Durango Off-Leash Park isn’t your typical hiking trail. It’s a convenient spot right in town that offers a fantastic off-leash area for pups to run around. It’s also a great place to meet other dog owners and get some exercise. The area is partially fenced in and runs along the river, providing a perfect spot for Fido to jump in and cool off on hot summer days.

Pedestrian access is 0.1 miles west of the intersection of Hwy 160 w and Hwy 550, on the south side of Hwy 160 w.  There is limited parking in the dirt parking lot.

THE COLORADO TRAIL

The Colorado Trail is an extensive trail spans 468 miles, weaving through mountains, forests, and rivers. You can take your dog for a short walk or plan a full day of hiking through some of the most stunning landscapes in the state. This hike tops our list as one of the best places to hike with your dog in Durango due to its proximity to town, water features, and beautiful scenery throughout.

The trailhead sign at the Durango terminus is located at the Junction Creek Trailhead, approximately 3.5 miles from Main Avenue in town.

HORSE GULCH TRAIL

The Meadow Loop via the Horse Gulch Trail is a fantastic hiking route in Durango that offers uphill sections with pleasant views of the surrounding landscape. As you hike the trail, you’ll ascend alongside Horse Gulch before completing a short loop around a meadow, which provides views of the Durango scenery. Keep in mind that this trail is also popular with mountain bikers, so be sure to share the path and stay aware, especially if you’re hiking with your dogs.

From 9th Street and Main Avenue in Durango, head east on 9th Street toward Fort Lewis College Mesa. Take a right on East 3rd Avenue, and a left onto College Drive (6th Street). Take a right on East 8th Avenue and a left on East 3rd Street. Behind the Mercy Medicine parking lot is a trailhead and parking area for Horse Gulch Trail System.
